Anatomy of Handicapping the Kentucky Derby Winner

by Hollywood Sports

Sunday, May 11, 2025

Sovereignty was my Best Bet to win the Kentucky Derby this year. Trainer Bill Mott and jockey Junior Alvarado are proven duo together — and I expected they had this horse ready to run the best race of life. He won at Churchill Downs in Grade 3 Street Sense last October — so he was proven on the track. He has been steadily improving in his five starts although his second-place finish in his last race at the Florida Derby might raise some eyebrows. Frankly, it looked like Mott took it easy on this horse in preparation for that race since his Kentucky Derby slot was all but assured. His training had been great in what was an ideal preparation for the first of the Triple Crown races. Sovereignty is a closer so handling the 1 1/4 mile distance should be fine. His Best Beyer number was 95 which is solid but not spectacular — but his Beyer rating of 92 in his last race at the Florida Derby suggests he was being eased into the Derby. An hour before the race,  Sovereignty was at 9-1 odds. The last nine winners of the Kentucky Derby have come in at 8:1 or higher odds. Given the rain that day, these horses were running in the slop which creates a significant wild card for the top favorites since only a handful of the horses in the field have experience in the rain or mud. The betting favorite was Journalism running out of the #8 pole position at 7:2 odds at post time. I considered that underlay value. His jockey Umberto Rispoli lacked significant Derby experience. The fact that four of his five races featured just four other horses was a big red flag since there were more horses in that race than he had faced in his entire career. California horses do not engage in quite as stiff of competition out west.Sovereignty drew the #18th pole position which presented a challenge being that far wide. But Alvarado was able to maneuver his horse into the middle of the pack. He was then able to make a move in the muck in the second half of the race — and it ended up being a duel with Journalism. Sovereignty proved to be the better racehorse that day by pulling away for the victory by 1 1/2 lengths. His post-time odds settled at 7:1. Interestingly, Sovereignty posted a Beyer figure of 105 in winning the derby. That result supported my speculation that Mott was holding back letting this horse fire away at the Florida Derby in his final tune-up before the Kentucky Derby. Beyer figures are a helpful tool when analyzing horse races — but handicappers need to remember that they are not necessarily predictive. It measures past results — yet the goal of trainers (and the owners of the horse) is to win the biggest prizes. And horse owners like to bet on their horses so better odds generate bigger cashed tickets. If Sovereignty had posted a 105 Beyer number at the Florida Derby, then he probably would have become the top favorite for the Kentucky Derby. But by racking up enough points to ensure entry into the derby before the Florida Derby, Mott earned the luxury to hold Sovereignty back for the Kentucky Derby — and get better odds for his horse. Sovereignty will not race at the Preakness Stakes which does not surprise me. He may have been at a disadvantage against some of the speedier horses at Pimlico which is 1/16th of a mile shorter than the Kentucky Derby at 1 3/16 miles. Mott will surely prepare Sovereignty to return for the Belmont Stakes next month which at 1 1/2 miles better suits its closing strength.Best of luck — Frank.

Argentina Liga Profesional de Futbol Futures (Apertura Playoffs 2025 Season)

by Amedeus Mastrangelo

Friday, May 09, 2025

The first phase of the season for the Argentina Liga Profesional de Futbol ended on May 4 and now the league will be entering into their playoffs. The league was split into 2 groups of 15 teams each for this first phase of the season and the top 8 teams from each of those 2 groups will compete against each other to see who lifts the title for this part of the season. With the first round of the playoffs starting on May 10, it is time to see who has the best chance at making a deep run and winning it all.  To Win Outright River Plate +400: River Plate is coming into these playoffs as the team with the best chance at lifting the title, according to the oddsmakers. They finished in 2nd place of their group with 31 points from an 8-7-1 record and they had one of the better goal differentials in the league at +12, scoring 21 goals and allowing 9 goals in their 16 matches. River Plate is always a big threat as they are one of the bigger clubs in Argentina and have the money to spend to keep this team at an elite level all the time. They have not been as dominant in recent years though and this is another season that they were not exactly running away with the league. They still finished 4 points behind the leaders of their own group and they drew a lot of games that they should not have dropped points in. They have the potential to be so much more than what they have been, but they are not going to be fully focused on these playoffs as they will also have to worry about midweek Copa Libertadores matches taking their attention away. They could also run into some trouble in the next round as they have a very strong path to get through in these playoffs. River Plate does have the quality to win it all, but they have not really shown it in the league yet and there are better options to go with considering how River Plate is the favorite. There are better options to go with than taking River Plate at this price.  Argentinos Juniors +500: Argentinos Juniors is coming into these playoffs as the next team with the best chance at lifting the title, according to the oddsmakers. Argentinos Juniors finished at the top of their group with 33 points from a 9-6-1 record and a +15 goal differential, scoring 24 goals and allowing 9 goals in their 16 matches. They have been heating up in their recent matches toward the end of the season and they have been scoring a lot more goals in these matches compared to the beginning of the season. They have also been keeping a lot of clean sheets in recent matches and that is going to help them make a deep run in these playoffs. Argentinos Juniors is the most sound team on both sides of the ball as they scored the 2nd most goals in the whole league and they allowed the 3rd fewest, finishing with the best GD in the whole league though. They also have some experience from last year’s Copa de la Liga as they dominated their group that season and made a bit of a run in the playoffs before losing to Velez Sarsfield in the Semi Finals. They did not lose any matches though as their loss to Velez came in penalties, and they only have the 1 loss this season as well. They are also a very unique team as they are very tough to score on and can win matches defensively, but they also know how to come from behind and can score goals if they need to dig themselves out of a hole. They have a very good path in the playoffs as well, not really facing a team that is going to challenge them until the Semi Finals, and that puts them in a great position to get through the first 2 rounds with ease and make a deep run. There is a lot of value in Argentinos Juniors at this price.  Boca Juniors +500: Boca Juniors is coming into these playoffs as the next team with the best chance at lifting the title, according to the oddsmakers. Boca Juniors finished in 2nd place of their group with 33 points from a 10-3-3 record and they had a +13 goal differential, scoring 24 goals and allowing 11 goals in their 16 matches. Boca did not finish the season playing in the greatest form, but they have been a very tough team to score on all season and that is going to make them a threat in these playoffs. They have the defense to drag out a lot of matches if they are struggling to score so it is very rare that they will have to play from behind, but they also had the 2nd best attack in the whole league this season and they can score goals when they need to. They are also one of the bigger clubs in Argentina so they always have the quality to stay competitive as an elite team in this league and they also have a large following that will make their home matches in these playoffs electric. Boca Juniors has not won a league trophy in a while so they are going to have the motivation in this competition and they also have the advantage of not being in Copa Libertadores or Copa Sudamericana so they do not have any other matches to worry about and will be fully focused on these matches. The winner of this competition also gets an automatic spot in Copa Libertadores next year so that is going to mean a lot more for a big club like Boca who failed to get through the Copa Libertadores qualification rounds this year. Boca has the quality as well as the depth to make a deep run in these playoffs, and they also have a nice path to the final where they are not going to face any teams that are more dominant than they are. There is a lot of value in Boca Juniors at this price.  Rosario Central +500: Rosario Central is coming into these playoffs as the next team with the best chance at lifting the title, according to the oddsmakers. Rosario Central finished at the top of their group with 35 points from a 10-5-1 record and they had a +14 goal differential, scoring 22 goals and allowing 8 goals in their 16 matches. They had the best overall record for the whole league and they also had the best defense, averaging just 0.5 goals allowed per game this season. They may have dominated the league this season with only 1 loss in their 16 matches, but they are not a serious threat to make a deep run in these playoffs. They were much better at home this season which is going to help them a lot in these playoffs, but they do not have an easy path either. They have a very tough match right away as they are facing Estudiantes in the 1st round and Estudinates may have finished in 8th place in their group, but they are certainly not an 8th place quality team. They may not be consistent enough to win this whole thing, but they are a team with a lot of quality in their squad that can do some damage in these playoffs and mess up someone's season even if they do not win it themselves. Even if they get past the 1st round, there are some other quality teams on their side of the bracket that could pose a big threat deeper in the competition. Rosario Central dominated the league in this first phase of the season, but there are better teams in the league and they will eventually run into a team that trips them up. There is no real value in Rosario Central at this price.  RecommendationThere are plenty of teams who have chances to win this competition, but there can only be 1 winner and winning matches during the league season is very different from winning matches in these types of situations. There are only a handful of teams who actually have the quality to win these types of matches when it matters most, and those teams are going to show up now despite how well or how poorly they did during the season. Argentinos Juniors at +500 has a lot of value as they were one of the stronger teams in the league all season, but they also have the quality both offensively and defensively to make a deep run against other teams with similar quality. Boca Juniors at +500 also has a lot of value as they did very well during the season, also with a very good attack and defense, and they have the motivation to push hard in this competition as well. Argentinos Juniors at +500 and Boca Juniors at +500 are the 2 best options to go with in these playoffs and with the way the bracket is set, there is a good chance that these two meet in the Final.

Truist Championship Preview and Best Bets

by Matt Fargo

Wednesday, May 07, 2025

Following taking off the two-man Zurich Classic of New Orleans and then the Scottie Scheffler against the field THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, we are back for the Truist Championship, the sixth signature event of the season. Formerly known as the Wells Fargo Championship, Truist took over sponsorship and instead of playing at Quail Hollow which is the typical venue but is hosting the PGA Championship, Philadelphia Cricket Club will take center stage. The Flourtown, Pennsylvania property is the oldest country club in the United States, consisting of three courses with the Wissahickon Course hosting. This par 70 iconic track measures 7,119 yards so while not overly long, driving distance is still very important. It is a very unique layout whereas a normal course under 7,200 yards can be considered easy, this one is penal. The 118 bunkers are what give the course its teeth as the fairway bunkers are placed in areas where accuracy comes into play to avoid finding them. Hitting greens from these bunkers will be challenging enough but due to being fast and firm, they will be near impossible to hold if not hitting from the fairway to control spin. The rough is manageable but again, keeping the ball on the putting surface from it will be tough. The green sizes are slightly above the norm, averaging just under 5,800 square feet and feature Bentgrass surfaces. One of the parameters we like to examine is course history, but we do not have that here with this being a one off stop. We can look at correlating courses but they are tough to find in this area with the Bentgrass greens and heavily bunkered areas. So we have to concentrate on current form along with the key stats. It is a loaded field with eight of the OWGR top ten as well as 21 of the top 25. There are 72 players in the field in this no cut event and the one big exclusion is Scheffler who opted out following his win last week. The top favorites are Rory McIlroy (+400), Colin Morikawa (+1400), Xander Schauffele (+1400), Ludvik Aberg (+1600) and Patrick Cantlay (+2000). Unfortunately, weather will be an issue this week with rain expected to come in Thursday night and hang out for most of the day on Friday. There is no threat of storms and the wind will be a non-factor the first two days and then ramping up Saturday with wind between 12 and 15 mph, gusting up to 24 mph. It looks like a perfect Sunday finish with no rain or wind. Top four key categories this week in order: Strokes Gained: Tee-To-GreenStrokes Gained: ApproachStrokes Gained: Putting (Firm and Fast)Sand Saves Each bet is Win/Top Five/Top Ten. The typical recommendation is 50%/25%/25% with odds, payouts and results based on a $1000 unit (easy round number for bookkeeping) on each of the following players. The payouts are listed right below the odds which are all from DraftKings: Patrick CantlayOdds: Win 2,000 ~ Top Five 350 ~ Top Ten 160Payout: Win 10,000.00 ~ Top Five 875.00 ~ Top Ten 400.00 Tommy FleetwoodOdds: Win 2,500 ~ Top Five 450 ~ Top Ten 200Payout: Win 12,500.00 ~ Top Five 1,125.00 ~ Top Ten 500.00 Viktor HovlandOdds: Win 2,500 ~ Top Five 450 ~ Top Ten 220Payout: Win 12,500.00 ~ Top Five 1,125.00 ~ Top Ten 550.00 Daniel BergerOdds: Win 4,000 ~ Top Five 600 ~ Top Ten 275Payout: Win 20,000.00 ~ Top Five 1,500.00 ~ Top Ten 687.50 Results through The RBC Heritage (12 Tournaments): Win: -9,000Top Five: -2,125Top Ten: -1,725Top 20 Masters: -90

UFC 315: Preview And Picks

by Will Rogers

Sunday, May 04, 2025

Fight fans are in for a treat this weekend. UFC 315 will be held at the Bell Center in Montreal. The main card is loaded. Both the main event and the co-main event are for titles. Valentina Shevchenko defends her flyweight belt against Manon Fiorot. After that, Jack Della Maddalena will challenge Belal Muhammad for the welterweight crown. Let's take a closer look.  Main Event This was originally supposed to feature Belal Muhammad defending his belt against Shavkak Rakhmonov. When Rakhmonov dropped out, we now get Muhammad vs. Jack Della Maddalena. Muhammad, 36-years old, is 24-3. He's laying -225 at the betting window. Maddalena, 28-years old, has a 17-2 record. He's 7-0 in the UFC. Each standing 5-foot-11, both fighters have similar builds. Muhammad, has won six straight. Before that, he had a no-contest vs. Leon Edwards. Prior to the no-contest, "Remember The Name" had won four in a row. So, that's 10 wins with one no-contest in his last 11 fights. He hasn't lost since 2019. In his last fight, Muhammad dominated Leon Edwards in front of Edward's fans in Manchester. Maddalena's winning streak goes back even further than Belal's. As a matter of fact, he's won 17 straight. Naturally, both fighters are coming in extremely confident.  Gilbert Burns, a welterweight contender who’s fought both  Muhammad and Maddalena believes that Maddelena is being underestimated. Burns said this: “The fight is closer than people think. JDM (Maddalena) is super underrated, people have no idea. That guy hits so hard, and his jiu-jitsu is getting so much better training with Craig Jones.” The Verdict: Muhammad is the real deal but the value lies with the underdog. Off 17 straight wins, JDM has a real shot at seizing the moment and scoring a monumental upset.  Co-Main EventValentina Shevchenko (24-4-1) is the champion. She's had an outstanding career and has taken on the best of the best. She holds all kinds of records in the flyweight division and is widely recognized as being one of the top female fighters of all-time. However, challenger Manon Fiorot (12-1, 7-0 in the UFC) is the -162 betting favorite. That says a lot about how good the lesser known Fiorot is. We last saw Fiorot in 2024, earning a 5-round decision against Erin Blanchfield. That was Fiorot's first UFC Main Event. Prior to that, she defeated Rose Namajunas. Blanchfield was on a 9-fight winning streak and Namajunas was a former UFC champ. So, those were quality opponents. Fiorot, a high level striker, will be the first French female to fight for a belt. Shevchenko is off three consecutive fights against Alexa Grasso. (Grasso also fights on the UFC 315 card.) She lost the first, drew the second and won the third. Prior to the Grasso trilogy, Shevchenko had won nine straight. She's avenged two of her four career losses and the other two both came against Amanda Nunes, perhaps the best women's fighter in UFC history. It'd be easy to assume that her age (37) is the reason that Shevchenko is the underdog. However, Fiorot is 35-years old herself.  The Verdict: Once again, the value is on. the underdog. Fiorot is really tough but she's never fought someone as good as Shevchenko. Go with the champ. Other Notable FightsFormer champion Jose Aldo is a -230 favorite against Aiemann Zahabi, the only Canadian on the main card. Off her three fights against Shevchenko, Alexa Grasso takes on Brazil's Natalia Silva. Off 12 straight wins, Silva is a -225 favorite.  PoliticsCommentator Joe Rogan won't be making the trip to Montreal. Last month, he said that: "He'd rather go to Russia than Canada." Rogan still isn't going but did backtrack on his initial statement a little. "I just wanna say to the Canadian people, I said the other day that I don't go to Canada anymore, I'd rather go to Russia. I was joking around, first of all. I do not go to Canada anymore, but it's because of the government."
