Maple Leafs - Oilers preview, prediction and analysis
The Toronto Maple Leafs will be playing the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday, March 1 in Edmonton.
The Toronto Maple Leafs won against the Seattle Kraken last Sunday, February 26 at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, Washington with a score of 5-1. The Toronto Maple Leafs currently rank 2nd in the Atlantic Division.
Auston Matthews scored two goals for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Mitchell Marner had three assists, Timothy Liljegren had a goal and an assist, and William Nylander and Michael Bunting each had two assists for Toronto (37-15-8), which has won three straight. Ilya Samsonov made 26 saves.
"A lot of good things out there for sure," Matthews said "It always helps to put a couple in the net, but I thought we really were just on the puck tonight. You know, forcing turnovers on the other hand and just staying honest and hungry, so it felt good to kind of get that momentum back, and obviously a big win for our team here starting with the short trip."
Dunn gave the Kraken a 1-0 lead at 3:47 of the first period, scoring blocker side from the slot after Jared McCann knocked down a clearing attempt. Mark Giordano tied it 1-1 at 4:58 when his shot from above the left circle beat Grubauer five-hole through a screen.
John Tavares put the Maple Leafs in front 2-1 at 7:06 of the first. He tapped a loose puck into an open net after Justin Holl's initial shot from the point deflected to him off Nylander.
Liljegren made it 3-1 at 12:51 with a one-timer from the right circle off a cross-slot pass from Marner from below the goal line.
Matthews pushed the lead to 4-1 at 4:13 of the second period when he batted in a rebound near the right post. He then made it 5-1 at 12:31 of the third period, finishing a backdoor pass from Marner at the left post.
"I think when you see it go in, I think you just get a little extra pep in your step," Matthews said. "I thought tonight just as a line, as a team, you give up the first goal, I thought we really just dialed in our game."
The Toronto Maple Leafs have won seven of their last 10 games.
The Edmonton Oilers lost against the Boston Bruins on Monday, February 27 at Rogers Place in Edmonton with a score of 3-2. The Edmonton Oilers currently rank 3rd in the Pacific Division.
Stuart Skinner made 25 saves for the Oilers (32-21-8), who have lost two straight and six of eight (2-3-3).
"I'm proud of our team with that effort, obviously. Boston's the top team in the NHL for a reason," Edmonton coach Jay Woodcroft said. "They didn't need much in order to score, but when we broke down, they made us pay. We were unable to find the equalizer there in the third period, but I thought there were a lot of positives to take out of that game tonight."
Connor McDavid gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead at 2:17 of the first period. He received a stretch pass from Leon Draisaitl and scored five-hole from the left face-off circle.
Tomas Nosek scored 13 second later to tie it 1-1, lifting a shot over Skinner's glove after the puck was redirected in front by Garnet Hathaway along the goal line.
Nick Foligno put the Bruins ahead 2-1 at 15:06, finishing a give-and-go with Charlie Coyle.
McDavid tied it 2-2 at 12:20 of the second period during a 4-on-4. Klim Kostin won a race to beat out an icing and centered the puck to McDavid, who deked Swayman before tucking the puck into the open net.
McDavid, who extended his multigoal streak to four games, leads the NHL in goals, assists (65) and points (115) in 61 games this season. He is the fastest active player to score 50 goals in a season, passing Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs, who scored his 50th goal in his 62nd game last season.
"It is something you should be proud of, even for him, somebody who paces the League in pretty much every offensive stat," Oilers forward Zach Hyman said. "I think it is his first time hitting 50, and that is a milestone to be proud of. He is the reason we were on the board tonight. He got both. He just drives our team."
Pavel Zacha put the Bruins back in front 3-2 at 19:30 of the second when he dove to knock the puck in over Skinner, who had attempted a poke check.
Boston limited Edmonton to eight shots in the third period to preserve the win.
The Edmonton Oilers have won three of their last 10 games.
Prediction
This is going to be an interesting battle of the goalies and a great battle of the superstars. Does Toronto have enough to stop McDavid? Maybe not, but enough to stop everyone else? Likely. Maple Leafs 4, Oilers 3.
