St Louis Cardinals Analysis

The Cardinals are coming into this game after winning their series finale against the San Diego Padres on Sunday. This will be the series opener on Monday for a four-game series between them and the Brewers. The Cardinals are on an 8 game winning streak after sweeping the Padres and the New York Mets, both in a three-game series, and also winning the last 2 of their 3 games against the Cincinnati Reds over a week ago. J.A. Happ got the nod for Sunday's game while Jake Woodford will be the starting pitcher on the mound for them in this game on Monday. He is 2-3 with a 4.30 ERA this season. He has been credited with 2 straight losses but his team has actually won their last 2 games that he was the starter in. In his last start, he allowed 2 ER and 2 BB with 0 Ks on 4 hits through 4 IP against the Mets last Tuesday. He has faced the Brewers lineup twice this season, both times he came out of the bullpen as a reliever and both times he allowed 0 runs as his team still went on to lose both games. This will be his first time facing them as a starter this year. Their offense has scored 19 runs in their last 3 games averaging a little over 6 runs scored per game in that span. They have also allowed their opponents to score 11 runs against them in that same span allowing almost 4 runs per game.

Milwaukee Brewers Analysis

The Brewers are coming into this contest after losing their series finale on Sunday against the Chicago Cubs 6-4. That loss snapped a 2 game winning streak they were on but both wins came against the Cubs as the Brewers were swept in a two-game series against the Detroit Tigers prior to that one. Eric Lauer was the starter for Sunday's game while Freddy Peralta will be throwing the first pitch for them in this game on Monday. He is 9-4 with a 2.57 ERA this season. After winning 5 straight games with him on the bump, the Brewers have now lost 2 of Peralta's last 3 starts. In his last outing, he allowed 0 ER and 0 BB with 9 strikeouts on 2 hits through 6 innings of work against the Tigers last Tuesday. He also hit 2 batters with a pitch in that game. He has seen the Cardinals lineup 3 times this season and he is 0-1 against them with two no-decisions but his team is 1-2 against them when he was the starter. He has allowed 7 runs in his last 2 starts against them and only played in 4 innings between those 2 games. Their offense has scored 18 runs in their last 3 games averaging 6 runs scored per game in that span. They have also allowed their opponents to score 15 runs against them in that same span allowing 5 runs per game.

Cardinals vs Brewers Prediction

The Brewers are the better overall team here but they have started to cool off a bit in their last few series'. The Cardinals have been hot recently, they are pitching really well right now but they are also hitting the ball well and scoring lots of runs with their hitters. They have really turned on the jets in this final stretch and are pushing to spread the 3 game gap they have over the Reds who are currently behind them in the Wild Card standings. The Cardinals will likely keep pushing until the end so the value is on them here to keep playing well and win this game at a very nice underdog price with the Cardinals odds.

Players to Watch

St Louis Cardinals: Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado are both players to watch in this game. They pretty much lead their team in all offensive categories and if they are to keep pushing here to give themselves a chance at the World Series, they will need to keep playing well here. Look for both of them to spark some more offense from this team and win another big game here.

Milwaukee Brewers: Eduardo Escobar is one player to watch in this game. He leads his team in hits and in home runs so look for him to start heating up here and get into playoff form with few games left. The Cardinals are also division rivals so he will want to play well to spoil their chances of making the playoffs so look for him to make some big hits in this game.

Notable Quotes

"He's had several moments like that where he's hit a dramatic home run for us to go up late in a game. He's got a good approach. He knows his strengths. That's what's called growing up in the clubhouse right there." - Adam Wainwright on Tyler O’Neill hitting the game winning homer in the 8th inning on Saturday.

"There will be a little bit of celebrating tonight. But the main celebration is going to be when we clinch the division." - Corbin Burnes after his team clinched a playoff berth, showing their motivation to continue playing every game with effort still.
