Kraken - Red Wings preview, prediction and analysis
The Seattle Kraken will be playing the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday, March 2 in Detroit, Michigan.
The Seattle Kraken lost against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday, February 26 at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle Kraken with a score of 5-1. The Seattle Kraken currently rank 4th in the Pacific Division.
Vince Dunn scored for Seattle (32-21-6), which has lost three in a row. Philipp Grubauer allowed four goals on 21 shots before being replaced by Martin Jones, who made 11 saves.
Dunn gave the Kraken a 1-0 lead at 3:47 of the first period, scoring blocker side from the slot after Jared McCann knocked down a clearing attempt. Mark Giordano tied it 1-1 at 4:58 when his shot from above the left circle beat Grubauer five-hole through a screen.
"Our response to the first goal against wasn't good enough against a team with good ability," Kraken coach Dave Hakstol said. "Our energy and the start of our hockey game was good. As I said, we have to have a better response. … That goal goes in, we got to be stiffer, not just the next few shifts, with the rest of the period."
Toronto scored the remaining four goals of the game, making the final score 5-1.
"They put pucks into the scoring area and they've got a lot of good skill, but they've also got some heavy guys with hard sticks in there and they put pucks inside of there," Hakstol said. "For me, there's some of those struggles where we're reaching instead of getting in and getting under, being physical at the puck. When you reach against a team like this, you get yourself in trouble."
The Seattle Kraken have won three of their last 10 games as of February 27.
The Detroit Red Wings lost against the Ottawa Senators on Monday, February 27 at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa with a score of 6-2. The Detroit Red Wings currently rank 5th in the Atlantic Division.
Tyler Bertuzzi and David Perron scored for the Red Wings (28-23-8), who have lost two straight after winning seven of eight (7-1-0). Magnus Hellberg made 36 saves.
"Hellberg was remarkable on the penalty kill," Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. "Unbelievable east-west saves, but I think he got tired. He gives up the long goal to Tkachuk, he fans on one five-hole (on Giroux). I think that's a product of being in his crouch for a period and a half on the penalty kill."
Bertuzzi gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead at 11:48 of the first period when he drove to the net and tucked a shot past Talbot's outstretched right pad. Jake Sanderson tied it 1-1 at 3:41 of the second period with a slap shot from the point through traffic on a power play.
Detroit was without one of its top penalty killers, forward Michael Rasmussen, who is out indefinitely with a knee injury.
"I think we missed him big time tonight in a game like this," Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin. "Someone's going to have to step up and play. You know, he's kind of created a role, he does things that no one else on our team really does, and we miss that. But someone's going to have to step in and step up for us. I expect that tomorrow."
Perron put Detroit back in front 2-1 at 5:11 with his own power-play goal, a wrist shot short side from the left circle.
Drake Batherson scored another power-play goal to tie it 2-2 at 12:25, skating into the right circle and beating Hellberg blocker side.
"Too many penalties," Lalonde said. "That team will lose to nobody in the League if you give them six power plays.
"The power plays just demoralized us. It drains the top guys. Now we start making tired mistakes, we have no rhythm. And all of those (penalties) were on the front end. We literally, with too many penalties, gave ourselves zero chance."
Ottawa was the only team to score the remainder of the game adding another four goals with a final score of 6-2.
"Everyone's fighting for their lives," Larkin said. "We have teams that we're playing against that are battling for the same spot that we are. It did [feel like a playoff game] on the ice."
The Detroit Red Wings have won seven of their last 10 games as of February 27.
Prediction
I need to see Detroit beat a really good team to restore the confidence if they want to make the playoffs. If not, they might make a move at the deadline. Kraken 4, Red Wings 3
