New York Mets Analysis

The Mets are coming into this game with a 0-0 record overall but this will be their 2nd game of the regular season and 2nd game of their 4-game series against the Nationals here. Their season opener is on Thursday night prior to this game being played on Friday night. Tylor Megill was the starting pitcher for their game on Thursday while Max Scherzer will be on the mound for them on Friday in this game. He was 15-4 with a 2.46 ERA last season and he has pitched in 11 innings this season in Spring training. He allowed 6 hits, 3 runs, and 3 ER with one of those being a HR but he also had 12 strikeouts as well. He just came to the Mets in the offseason but he is well known as being one of the best pitchers active in the league right now. The Mets had some good hitters last season but their fairly new owner has already dove into his pockets to attract some better players to give a much needed boost to this hitting lineup. He has also spent the money to bring in some very good pitchers and this season is starting to look very promising for the Mets. Last season, they were averaging 7.7 hits per game, 3.9 runs scored per game, and 8.6 strikeouts per game.

Washington Nationals Analysis

The Nationals are coming into this game with a 0-0 record overall but this will be their 2nd game of the regular season and 2nd game of their 4-game series against the Mets here. Their home opener is on Thursday night prior to this game being played on Friday night. Patrick Corbin was the starting pitcher for their game on Thursday while Josiah Gray will be on the mound for them on Friday in this game. He was 2-2 with a 5.48 ERA last season and he has pitched in 9.2 innings this season in Spring training. He allowed 13 hits, 11 runs, and 10 ER with 5 of those being home runs but he also had 13 strikeouts as well. He has only made 14 starts in his career and even though he has only been credited with a decision in 4 of those starts, his team did not win many games last season when he was the starting pitcher. The Nationals have come a long way since winning the World Series a few years ago as they were not a very good team last season but they have still figured out a way to keep some high profile players as well. Last season, they were averaging 8.6 hits per game, 4.5 runs scored per game, and 8 strikeouts per game.

Mets vs Nationals Prediction

The Mets are coming into this game as a favorite and for good reason. The Mets have improved significantly from last season and they have done whatever they can to bring in top players at each position. They have strengthened both their pitching staff and their batting lineup, and they are going up against a Nationals team that is coming off of an awful season. The Nationals did not do much last season as they were a very bad team but they did not do much in the offseason to fix that either. The Mets have a lot to prove this season and with the amount of money spent on their team this season, they should have no problems winning this game. The Mets will win on the road here and get off to a great start to their season.

Notable Quotes

“Learning to win is part of player development.” - Buck Showalter coming into this season.

"I think it gives players a different perspective as far as getting ready because we do play night games and then turn around and play a day game. Even though it will be a different lineup, they can get their bodies accustomed to getting up after a night game and getting prepared, and getting ready." - Dave Martinez on having later games in spring training.
