What an electric start to the NHL season. So much parity, so many good teams through the first 10-plus games, you have every right to be excited! Of course the Vegas Golden Knights and Boston Bruins are heading the fun charge here as the top two teams in the league, because of course they are. But never count out the Avalanche, you know they're always going to be hanging around and will be eating worlds once they get everyone healthy. But this is a good time to be playing these hockey games, as well. Look no further than our own Vegas Writer off to a 14-11-0 start over the first 30 days of the NHL season. There's also ASA, Inc. posting a 10-5-1 mark through the first month. You know you can trust our champion handicappers to get you across the finish line with your NHL bets. Predators - Kraken preview, prediction and analysis
Recent results
Predators: won 4-3 (SO) at Canucks
Kraken: won 3-2 at Penguins; won four straight
Don’t look now, everyone. I don’t want to get you too excited because of what may or may not happen in the immediate future, but the Seattle Kraken are in a playoff spot if the season were to end today. A 4-game winning streak for the league’s newest team, mixed with a nice blend of youth and veteran talent, the Kraken are second in the Pacific after an incredible road trip with wins over Pittsburgh, Minnesota and Calgary.
Now, the Kraken will return home and hopefully keep the good times rolling with the Nashville Predators coming to town, who have also won two straight after losing four of five. Whether or not they’re actually on the rise remains to be seen, but I’m absolutely not of the mindset to be doubting the Kraken right now.
Seattle is coming off a 3-2 win in Pittsburgh on Saturday that handed the Penguins their seventh straight loss (which did you see that coming at all?) Brandon Tanev scored the winning goal with 3:39 remaining to seal all six points on this road trip. Martin Jones made 36 saves, another solid sign for the goaltending for this team that had so many questions coming in, and Morgan Geekie also had two assists.
"Great for me, but I think it's more important that the team got all six points on this road trip," Tanev said. "That's the mindset and the goal we had setting out to this road trip and the three games we played. We beat three good teams. That's the idea we wanted to do."
Now, I fully understand that we’re still early into the process. But the Kraken have yet to go on a run like this. They’ve yet to taste success to where the home crowd will be excited to come watch a competitive team. That’s exactly what you want from a group like this. There’s so much young talent on this team ready to blossom and if they keep getting this kind of production from the winning side, the confidence will continue to grow.
That’s why it’s important for Seattle to defeat these struggling teams, like the Predators, to keep the foot on the gas. Nashville has struggled as of late but is coming off a 4-3 shootout victory over the much-maligned Vancouver Canucks in Vancouver on Saturday. It took a 3-goal comeback, in which Nashville fell behind by three goals after the first period to rally and eventually win. Jordan Gross scored twice, and Nino Niederreiter scored his sixth of the year to tie and send it to the shootout.
"As soon as we scored that first goal, I felt like we had a mental advantage on them," Predators defenseman Mattias Ekholm said. "They seemed to be on their heels a little bit. They were just flipping pucks out, and we kept coming at them and got another goal and after that, we pressured for a fourth, and it didn't come until the shootout."
Prediction
I want Seattle to succeed so badly, man. There’s something about meaningful hockey in Seattle in March and April that sounds so fun. I’m here for it. The Kraken are playing well, they’re getting great goaltending, and coming home after a successful road trip seems like the perfect recipe to put this winning streak to five. Kraken win 3-2
