Tigers vs Rays Preview and Analysis

Recent Form

The Rangers are 5-5 over their last ten games.  Logging 5 Overs, 3 Unders and 2 Push.  They went 1-0 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, 2-1 against the Oakland Athletics, 1-3 against the Houston Astros, 1-1 against the Chicago White Sox.  They aren’t winners this season and haven’t been in several seasons.  The club is not sure what direction to go.  They have been sellers not buyers at the trade deadlines… They sign mid-level free agents.  Their call-ups from the minors don’t show enough promise to justify not going out to land a few top players.

The Yankees are 5-5 over their last ten games.  While that is a good stretch for the Rangers, for the Yankees it is disastrous.  The American League East is super tight for the 2nd place spot in the home stretch.  The Yankees are technically 1 game behind the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Blue Jays are right on the heels of the Boston Red Sox.  A three-game series of wins, with some losses for the opponents could land them back in 2nd place… and there are enough games left to make that happen. They need to find some passion and get a streak right here, right now.

Offensive Analysis

The Rangers are 29th in runs scored, 29th in batting average, 30th in OBP.  They are bottom of the barrel hitters. The lineup that can’t produce earned runs. The Rangers’ offense has to find some batters that will at least hit the occasional long ball before the season ends.  It is as important as finding pitchers who can give you quality starts.  Next season is coming and they have to do all the lineup changes necessary to improve the Rangers odds.

The Yankees are 19th in runs scored, 22nd in batting average, and 9th in OBP.  They entered the season with a lot of promise.  They still have a great chance to catch a wild card spot and do damage in the postseason.  But for Jumanji sake… someone in the front office will have to admit that Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge do not compliment each other.  One of these guys will have to go to either bolster the pitching staff or find a few guys who can get on base.  You can swing for home runs all day but if there is not anyone on base you won’t score as much.

Defensive Analysis

The Rangers are 25th in team ERA 4.76, 28th in strikeouts 1134, 21st in WHIP 1.35.  Their bb ratio is good. 13th in the league.  This is of course because the Rangers’ relievers give up so many hits they don’t have time for walks.  It’s like an illness when a team is bad.  It starts by affecting either the pitching or the hitting… then it spreads to the other side.  Then management thinks “we should save money”, and they sell off anyone who is wanted elsewhere.  Suddenly you have a team that is so bad… there is no clear path to improvement.  The young guys you get back in these trade deadline deals may be good in a few years… or may never be. The fans in Arlington stop coming as often which makes the owner reticent about spending more cash to improve… it’s an endless cycle.
The Yankees are 5th in team ERA 3.75, 4th in strikeouts 1443, 6th in WHIP 1.20.  The reason the Yankees are any good is the pitching.  They have it in spades.  Without run support almost any pitcher will suffer the indignity of underserved losses. And they certainly can’t be happy not getting run support practically tied with the Toronto Blue Jays, a team that gets run support in their sleep.  It’s one thing for Nestor Cortes to pitch well against the Baltimore Orioles, totally another to pitch well against Miami.

Yankees:  Joey Gallo LF (neck) questionable *  Frazier LF (eye) out for season.

Players to Watch

Rangers:  SS Isiah Kiner-Falefa. He had a rough game against the Chicago White Sox… multiple throwing errors, sailing throws, rough day at the plate.  He may be the Rangers' best player.

Yankees:  LF Tyler Wade.  The starting LF Joey Gallo, who used to be a Ranger, is questionable with a neck injury.  This is Tyler Wade’s chance to show he belongs.  Watch him closely as he may only appear briefly.

Notable Quotes

"It was typical of what I thought of Lance,....I knew he wouldn't give up a ton of runs, but we got just enough." -Rangers manager Chris Woodward, about getting a win against the Chicago White Sox and former Ranger Lance Lynn.

"Hopefully it's just something where kind of the neck goes out on you or you sleep on it wrong,...I've been there before where it really affects your swing. Hopefully it's something that they can kind of work their way out of there." Yankees Manager,  Aaron Boone.  About Joey Gallo having a sore neck.
