Braves vs Marlins Preview and Analysis

Recent Form

Miami is 5-5 over their last ten games.Going 3 Over, 6 Under, and 1 Push.  They beat the  Cincinnati Reds 1-0, went 0-2 against the New York Mets, 2-1 against the Philadelphia Phillies, 2-1 against the New York Mets (again), and 0-1 in the first game of this series.

Atlanta is 5-5 over their last ten games.  Going 3 Over, 6 Under, and 1 Push.  They went 0-2 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-2 against the Colorado Rockies, 2-1 against the Washington Nationals, and 1-0 in the first game against the Miami Marlins.

Offensive Analysis

The Marlins are 26th in team batting average .235, 28th in runs scored 555, 28th in home runs 134.  The plate is where Miami struggles mightily.  Twitter rarely lights up with news coverage of a great batting performance from the Marlins. Especially not after they dealt two hitters Duvall and Starling Marte away at the trade deadline. The bright spot now is rookie Jazz Chisolm who is hitting an impressive .745 OPS. With first baseman Jesus Aguilar on the IL Jazz gets to be the best hitter on the team.  He’ll make a great Yankee or Red Sock one day (is that the singular of Red Sox?).

The Braves are 13th in team batting average .242, 9th in runs scored 686, 3rd in home runs 211.  Offense is not a problem for Atlanta.  They will wear Miami’s bullpen thin. Atlanta has been hitting the long ball solid all season and Miami has been 5th worst in giving up home runs.  That’s a formula for needing to bring your opera glasses to the game if you want to see where everything eventually lands.

Defensive Analysis

The Miami Marlins are 19th in ERA 3.88, 19th in strikeouts 1196, 12th in WHIP 1.25, 15th in BB.  They are average, dull, bland, regular.  They fall in the middle of the pack.  As a sports bettor you can rely on them to be the lesser rotation against good squads.  As a fantasy baseball manager you should notice the lack of passion that leads to finding the definition of average in these numbers. Plus if you are betting on them, the offense will let you down.

Over their last ten games Atlanta’s pitchers Ian Anderson, Huascar Ynoa, Touki Toussaint, Max Fried, and Charlie Morton have all gone 1-1.  They all were the starter twice… they all lost once and won once.  This full list of Atlanta starting pitchers perfectly encapsulates the Atlanta season so far:  Nobody dominant, nobody bad.  Atlanta is 13th in team ERA 3.99, 14th in strikeouts 1243, 13th in WHIP 1.27.  Once again we return to the theme.  This team is slightly above average but not dominant in any category.  They don’t crack the top ten.  They have a good record and when faced with a postseason opponent they will be summarily dismissed.
