Atlanta Braves vs San Francisco Giants Preview and Analysis

Recent Form
Braves:  76-68, 1st place NL East
Giants:  95-51, 1st place NL West, 1st place overall (for now).

It is on!  As we wind down the 2021 season, the Giants are winning at a blistering place.  They can see the finish line and they have a big lead over everyone… except that one runner who is right on their heels.  The Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers are a howling pack of two. No one can catch them in the National League, no one can catch them in the American League.  They are separated by 1 game.  Over the last ten games the Giants have won the most, the Dodgers have won the second most… a difference of one game.  If either of these teams hits a 5-5 stretch in the next ten games the result would be disastrous.. They’d be left in the dust.

The Giants are 9-1 over their last ten games. Logging 7 Overs and 3 Unders.  The offense didn’t score less than 6 runs in any of the ten games, even the lone loss to the road underdogs San Diego Padres in the last outing.  That finished at Padres 9 - Giants 6.  They beat the Dodgers back on September 5th (or they would be tied right now), swept the Colorado Rockies 3-0, swept the Chicago Cubs 3-0, and went 2-1 against the San Diego Padres.  A ten game run total of 83.  They averaged 8.3 runs a game!!

The Braves don’t have anywhere near that kind of motivation.  They have a 3 game lead over the silly Philadelphia Phillies in the weak NL East.  They did go 5-5 in their recent games with hardly of a whiff of a streak to come.  They have a winning record, they already feel like winners, they will be content to save the occasional starter in any tough matchup.  They aren’t feeling any heat from the New York Mets.  The Braves will be happy with whatever playoff scenario falls to them after the NL West is done clobbering each other.

The Atlanta Braves are 5-5 over their last ten games.  Notching 4 Overs, 4 Unders and 2 Push.  They went 1-1 against the Colorado Rockies, 2-1 against the Washington Nationals, 2-1 against the Miami Marlins, and dropped 0-2 to the Colorado Rockies.

Offensive Analysis

The Braves are 11th in team batting average .242, 9th in runs scored 701, 3rd in home runs 216.  An impressive number of homers.  The Braves are a very consistent top ten batting team.  They can hit, they will score, a longball isn’t a rarity.

The Giants are 7th in batting average .248, 6th in runs scored 724, 2nd in home runs 222.  More hits, more home runs, more runs scored. Every stat line that counts is like this for the Giants over the Braves. The Giants just built a ten game run total of 83.  They averaged 8.3 runs a game!! They hit the Over 7 times in ten.  In the 3 Unders it was because the other team scored so little.

Defensive Analysis

The Atlanta Braves pitching staff is 12th in team ERA 3.99, 14th in strikeouts 1283, 19th in WHIP 1.26.  Add that up and what do you get?  Atlanta pitching is average.  They play in a weak NL EAST and are in first place with average pitching.

The San Francisco Giants are 2nd in team ERA 3.26, 15th in strikeouts 1275, 2nd in WHIP 1.14.  They are second in a lot of pitching categories… The Los Angeles Dodgers are first in those categories.  The rest of the season will be a wildly tense ride.

Notable Quotes

“The fact we played through a tropical storm last night kind of took the field away from us today,....It was terrible out there. It was all top dress [drying agent], so it would be like playing on the beach.” -Braves manager Brian Snitker, about postponing Thursday’s game.

“He’s an important starter for us,....When he’s ready to be back in our rotation, it’s a really good thing for us as a group. It’s not the easiest thing to get through with three starters, and the sooner we have Woody available for us on a regular basis, the better. That means getting him into a game as soon as he’s ready for that.” - Giants manager, Gabe Kapler.  About the Giants missing a few starting pitchers during the most critical stretch of the season.  Alex Wood is out with Covid… he declined to discuss his vaccination status.  If he were vaccinated though he’d already be back in the rotation and so many people wouldn’t have realized he’s a dummy.
