A full day’s slate of games in honor of Martin Luther King Jr Day. This matchup is of the very lowly Eastern Conference Indiana Pacers and the middling Western Conference Los Angeles Clippers. The Sportsbooks have all leaned toward the clippers being 1-point favorites… basically a pick em’. Why so much disrespect for the Clippers?... Injury. The Clippers have been without their best player SF Kahwi Leonard all season, and now are missing their 2nd best guy SF Paul George… to compound matters they are also missing SG Luke Kennard. Luke is a discount J.J. Reddick (though they paid less for Reddick) and his shooting is needed desperately. So then the Pacers must be better?... No, they are also missing a gang of quality players… C Myles Turner, SG Malcolm Brogdon, SF TJ Warren, PG TJ McConnell, SG Jeremy Lamb. It’s gotten so bad they may keep Lance Stephenson for the rest of the season. What we have left is a battle between two squads of disparate parts and vague on-court leadership.
The Indiana Pacers have lost their last 3-games straight… and are sadly only winners of 1 of their last ten games. Pacers’ star player C Domantas Sabonis is having yet another wonderful season on the stat lines 18.9 ppg, 11.9 rpg… He has been throwing away solid stats in Oklahoma City and Indiana for his entire career. He is really best suited as a Paul Gasol type to someone else’s Kobe Bryant… Denver perhaps. For now he is all the Pacers really have on any consistent basis. Against a team like the Clippers he could dominate form the opening tip to the final buzzer… and still the Pacers could lose.
The Los Angeles Clippers have lost their last two games to the New Orleans Pelicans and the Sacramento Kings… so the Pacers should feel no fear. The Clippers have won 4 games out of their last ten. If it is their intention to hold on to the #8 spot in the Western Conference they sure aren’t showing any signs of it. At the moment the team is looking to PG Reggie Jackson to lead them… and he is really best suited as a defensive stopper off the bench. The team has been waiting the last 3 seasons for SG/PG Terrence Mann to move from super sub to full time starter… especially when Paul George and Kawhi are out… it just hasn’t happened. The very scary part for Clippers fans is that LA has little to no draft capital or salary cap space for years to come. The only improvement possible comes from full health for all involved.
