Panthers - Flyers preview, prediction and analysis
Recent results
Panthers: lost 4-2 at Blackhawks
Flyers: lost 3-0 vs. Sharks
The Florida Panthers have not been able to find that bit of consistency that’s been expected to this point. The Panthers are coming off a 4-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks in yet another instance where they can’t string together consecutive wins. Florida has gone 2-2-1 in its last five after a 3-point streak at home. Matthew Tkachuk has continued his ridiculous start to the season with four goals and nine points through the first seven games, and Eetu Luostrainen scored a goal to give him six points through seven games. But the Blackhawks were able to get Sergei Bobrovsky for three goals on 21 shots. If there’s one weakpoint to look at the Panthers right now, it would be the goaltending. Bobrovsky and Spencer Knight are each posting save percentages below .910. Aaron Ekblad’s absence might be hindering them more than we thought. Considering that Brandon Montour is playing 28 minutes, perhaps that’s not the best type of situation to have. But the Panthers need something to go right for them as it pertains to putting some consistency together. Right now, that’s hard to come by.
“There’s going to be a bunch of opportunities to look and say, ‘If that had gone,’ what would have happened,” Florida coach Paul Maurice said. “You know what? They (the Blackhawks) played well. They defended well. They blocked shots. They got in the lanes. They got above our outs in the neutral zone. They played a hell of a game.”
The Philadelphia Flyers are coming off a 3-0 loss to the San Jose Sharks at home back on Oct. 23, now sitting at 4-2-0 after their undefeated start. Losing to the Sharks might be more embarrassing than anything, but that loss is exactly what the Flyers have had to curtail with heading into this season. Felix Sandstrom, giving Carter Hart a day off, made 22 saves after beating the Nashville Predators the night before on a back-to-back. But if you were watching the latest game, you probably noticed Kevin Hayes and Travis Konecny not on the ice during the entire third period.
“I'm going to keep that in the room,” Flyers coach John Tortorella said when asked about the cut in ice time.
Well, alright then. Clearly this is just another situation of Tortorella losing his mind, but I digress.
Prediction
If we’re basing this on the latest trend of run for the Panthers, this is looking good for them heading into this game. I haven’t trusted the Flyers whatsoever, and are we really going to think about that now? Florida is just too good and much better than a team that would have no problem benching two players in the third. This game should see if Tortorella’s future prospects will actually come to fruition. I doubt it. Panthers win 5-2
