Stars - Jets preview, prediction and analysis

Recent results
Stars: won 6-2 at Oilers on Saturday; won three straight
Jets: won 4-0 vs. Blackhawks on Saturday; won five of six

Reports of Jason Robertson’s demise well before he played a game with the Dallas Stars under new coach Pete DeBoer were greatly exaggerated and he has quickly picked up right where he left off last year. Dallas’ young, dynamic star has 18 points through 12 games and leads the team with 8 goals as the Stars are off to an 8-3-1 start under DeBoer.

The Stars have won three in a row in which they’ve scored 18 goals and have allowed just six. The road trip continues Tuesday with the Stars heading to Winnipeg to face former coach Rick Bowness and the Jets in Manitoba.

Just when you think anything can happen with the Stars that hasn’t happened already, they go out and put a six spot on the Edmonton Oilers and run them out of their own barn. More than anything, Jamie Benn is out here scoring hat tricks at 80 years old. Robertson had a goal and two assists, but it was the Dallas captain that had the hat trick and sparked the Dallas offense in a way you wouldn’t have expected. Scott Wedgewood also was big in making 28 saves.

"This is a tough building and we played a real gritty road game," DeBoer said. "I thought 'Wedgy' made some big saves for us and let us get our legs under us. I though as the game wore on, we got to our game more and kind of established the way we wanted to play the game and dictated a big portion of it, other than when we took penalties."

Benn’s seventh hat trick was a subtle reminder that if Dallas can get this kind of output from Robertson and Joe Pavelski, that Benn’s and eventually Tyler Seguin’s secondary scoring will be very good down the road. But we’ve seen how DeBoer’s teams tend to falter down the stretch. Maybe that’s more a sign of how bad Vegas was managed.

Meanwhile, the Jets are playing their best hockey of the young season with five wins in six games, the lone loss coming against those aforementioned Golden Knights in which Connor Hellebuyck stood on his head about 30 times to give them a chance. Winnipeg came home after that tough loss to win 3-2 against Montreal and blank Chicago 4-0 over the weekend. Hellebuyck made 30 saves for the shutout

"Our details have been right," Hellebuyck said. "We're getting everyone's 'A' game right now. We've got a lot of character in this room and it's starting to show. We care about winning and we're showing it."

Still not sure if this is the kind of production Winnipeg can keep up for a consistent amount of time, but if Hellebuyck continues to play like this, it’s hard for any team to beat them. The Stars won’t have their Vezina Trophy goalie counter them in Jake Oettinger (lower body), so it looks like it will be tasked with Wedgewood to win another big game.

Prediction

The difference when it comes to Winnipeg always tends to be the blue liners. They got goals last game out from Josh Morrissey and Nate Schmidt, but Miro Heiskanen is on another level at this current point in time. The top-end talent from Dallas might be too much for Winnipeg to handle. Stars win 5-3
