Coyotes - Stars preview, prediction and analysis
The Arizona Coyotes will be playing the Dallas Stars on Wednesday, March 1 in Dallas, Texas.
The Arizona Coyotes lost against the Nashville Predators on Sunday, February 26 at Mullett Arena in Tempe, Arizona with a score of 6-2. The Arizona Coyotes currently rank 7th in the Central Division.
Nick Schmaltz scored in his third consecutive game and had an assist, and Connor Ingram made 28 saves for the Coyotes (20-30-9), who have lost two straight following a nine-game point streak (5-0-4).
"We said it before the game, we've got to get pucks behind them," Arizona defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere said. "I think we did it for some points in that game, but we've got to stick with it for a full 60 [minutes]."
Gostisbehere gave Arizona a 1-0 lead at 5:55 of the first period, scoring a short-handed goal on a partial breakaway off a give-and-go with Schmaltz.
Yakov Trenin tied it 1-1 at 9:02. With Ingram out of position following a save near the left post on Philip Tomasino, Trenin had his rebound attempt go in off the skate of Coyotes defenseman Troy Stecher.
Matt Duchene gave the Predators a 2-1 lead at 13:48, scoring off Ingram on a one-timer from the goal line off a backhand pass by Glass.
Roman Josi extended it to 3-1 at 2:39 of the second period with a wrist shot from the right face-off circle before Schmaltz cut it to 3-2 at 7:27, scoring on a wrist shot from the slot.
Nashville proceeded to score three more goals, resulting in the final score of 6-2.
Nashville was 2-for-3 with the man-advantage. Arizona was 0-for-5.
"We had a tough time creating [offense], had a tough time getting inside, and our power play didn't create enough," Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. "The special teams made a difference."
The Arizona Coyotes have won four of their last 10 games as of February 27.
The Dallas Stars lost against the Vancouver Canucks on Monday, February 27 at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas with a score of 5-4 in overtime. The Dallas Stars currently rank 1st in the Central Division.
Jamie Benn had a goal and an assist, and Jake Oettinger made 16 saves for the Stars (31-16-13), who have lost six of their past seven games (1-3-3).
Anthony Beauvillier gave Vancouver a 1-0 lead at 3:27 of the first period, finishing high glove side on a rebound. Benn tied it 1-1 at 8:37 with a short-handed breakaway after Tyler Seguin forced a turnover at the defensive blue line.
Sheldon Dries scored 23 seconds later on the same power play to put Vancouver back in front 2-1. Vasily Podkolzin pushed it to 3-1 at 15:03 when his shot from the slot banked in off of Stars defenseman Jani Hakanpaa.
"Just some miscues there," Hakanpaa said. "We've got to be way better for [Oettinger]. He's been unreal for us the whole year. We've just got to help him out better, protect that middle much more than we did today."
Evgenii Dadonov cut it to 3-2 at 4:33 of the second period, reaching back on a rush and tucking the puck past Demko's outstretched right pad. He was playing his first game for Dallas since being acquired in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday.
"It's always nice, first goal, I think it's crucial," Dadonov said. "It seems like [Wyatt Johnston] knows where I'm going, and he made a nice pass. The chemistry, it's huge. When you know what a guy is going to do, that makes your game much easier."
Beauvillier scored his second of the game to make it 4-2 at 11:28. Roope Hintz cut it to 4-3 at 17:46 of the second period when Benn found him driving to the front of the net for a power-play goal.
Nils Lundkvist tied it 4-4 at 3:25 of the third period on a shot from the high slot.
Andrei Kuzmenko scored 48 seconds into overtime to give the Vancouver Canucks a 5-4 win.
The Dallas Stars have won three of their last 10 games.
Prediction
I don't want to think the Stars are falling off, but it's not going to be easy against a Coyotes team even if they're coming in on the second night of a back-to-back. Dallas should take this one, and if not, might need to get the panic button ready. Stars 3, Coyotes 1
