Ducks - Red Wings preview, prediction and analysis
Recent results
Ducks: lost 2-1 (SO) at Bruins
Red Wings: lost 4-3 (OT) at Blackhawks
What a sharp contrast in this Sunday matchup between the Anaheim Ducks and Detroit Red Wings. With the Ducks, they won their season opener against the Seattle Kraken and have failed to capitalize since. Anaheim has lost four straight and have been outscored 18-8 in that run. But you take it with a grain of salt knowing all these losses have come on the road and maybe that’s what to be expected with a young group. The Red Wings, meanwhile, have points in their first four games and have looked really good under first-year coach Derek Lalonde.
The Red Wings are coming off consecutive overtime losses this week, losing 5-4 to the Los Angeles Kings at home, then 4-3 to the Chicago Blackhawks on the road on Friday night. The Red Wings got out to a 3-1 lead with goals from Pius Suter, Dylan Larkin and Dominik Kubalik, but just ran out of gas late in the third. Alex Nedeljkovic made 25 saves and had a couple of goals that he would likely want back, but the Red Wings are still building toward something good here and it’s going to be a work in progress. Especially with a young group like this.
“We just let our foot off the gas," Larkin said. “They came out to play in the third. We didn’t.”
Chicago scored twice in the third with the game-tying goal being a shorthanded goal. As expected, it’s going to be a learning curve for the Red Wings if they want to get back to the playoffs at some point. The building blocks are absolutely there and there’s plenty of reason to feel optimistic about this group.
“A lot of mistakes ended up in the back of our net," Lalonde said. "The reality is, they’ve got to go through things like this to learn.”
There is also a lot to learn for the Ducks as they try to figure out if they can actually contend for a playoff spot with Dallas Eakins leading the charge. Anaheim has lost four straight and is coming off a 2-1 shootout loss to the Boston Bruins, perhaps the most competitive game of that whole slate. Frank Vatrano scored the lone goal, and John Gibson made 35 saves before Taylor Hall ruined the party for the up-and-coming Ducks. So far, they still have a ways to go.
“We're not planning a parade off that game," Eakins said. “We played better. We still lost one of the points and we want them both.”
Unfortunately for Eakins, this might be the season where his job is on the line. This is a team that made strides in the first half of last year and failed to make the playoffs because it was the right time to sell. This doesn’t seem like the time to sell and if the Ducks don’t show any sort of progress, things are going to go downhill in a hurry.
Prediction
I like what the Red Wings did this summer, and that will translate over into quality results at some point. Detroit gets it done and wins another. Red Wings win 4-2
