Georgetown - St. John's preview, prediction and analysis

Recent form
Providence: won 74-62 vs. Georgetown
St. John's: lost 68-66 at Butler

The Providence Friars will look to continue the good momentum in Big East when they visit the St. John’s Red Storm on Saturday in New York City.

The No. 20 Friars are coming off a 74-62 win over the Georgetown Hoyas at home on Wednesday. Bryce Hopkins scored 17 point, and Devin Carter and Ed Croswell each ahd 12 points for their fourth win in five games.

“That’s a very hard team to play against,” Providence coach Ed Cooley said. “Winning is very hard, but I think our players continue to get better. I was very proud of our effort.”

It has been a complete smorgasbord in the Big East with five ranked teams ruling the roost. Providence has been the latest to join the party with their play in conference action, moving to 10-3 and tied for second place in the conference. Creighton, Marquette and Xavier are still ahead of them, with UConn not that far back at 8-6.

The Friars are 15-9 against the spread this season and had a four-game ATS winning streak end with the Georgetown game. Providence was favored by 13 points and failed to cover in the 12-point win. Can’t really blame them taking their foot off the gas against a Georgetown team that has been nothing but a major disappointment this season.

Meanwhile, it’s been just an overall bad time for St. John’s the past few weeks. The Red Storm is coming in after losing for the fifth time in six games with a 68-66 loss at Butler on Tuesday. This was a game that shouldn’t have gotten away from St. John’s. They shot nearly 50 percent from the floor, had just 11 turnovers and shot 40 percent from 3-point range.

They just happened to take their foot off the gas in the second half, getting outscored 34-25 in the final 20 minutes. Posh Alexander led the way with 17 points on.8 of 11 shooting, and Rafael Pinzon had 14 points to help St. John’s, but not enough to prevent the collapse.

St. John’s is just 4-10 in conference play this year, but fortunately nowhere close to falling as far down as Georgetown, which is 1-13. But they need to find a way to snap this three-game losing streak. This will be a tough game to do it against.

Prediction

Providence tends to turn it on this time of year, and it won’t be shocking to see them do it again. The Friars have the talent to really shock some folks in the Big East, and this game will be no exception. Providence 74, St. John’s 60
