NBA Basketball: Detroit Pistons VS Charlotte Hornets Pick and Predictions 02/27/2023

An Eastern Conference battle of Losers.  Tom Petty once sang “Even the Losers get lucky sometimes”... he meant the NBA Draft Lottery.  Both these Losing Eastern Conference teams have not yet won 20 games after playing 60+.  The season is almost over and they have no intentions of ever being competitive this season.  The Detroit Pistons are the very worst team in the league along with the Houston Rockets… They are also missing PG Cade Cunningham… their best player.  The Charlotte Hornets have some very fine scorers… and absolutely none of them are any good on defense (including PG LaMelo Ball.. who I would trade now before his value dries up over the next 3 seasons).  The great betting opportunity in this game is in understanding that the tire fire in Charlotte can at least score the ball… while the tire fire in Detroit is sure to dribble the ball off their foot.  Let’s check the numbers then bet on Charlotte because they will outscore Detroit.

The Detroit Pistons have won just 2 of their last 10 games.  Those games are what we like to call “flukes”... They also were against San Antonio and Charlotte… so not so tough.  Since the win over Charlotte, the Hornets have gotten LaMelo Ball back from the injury list.  Plus the Pistons have lost several guys to the injury list… so this is not a comparable game to that one. The Pistons went 6-4 ATS during that stretch,.. Mostly because the spreads were HUGE… This spread is more manageable… They are on a 4-game losing streak.

The Charlotte Hornets have won 4 of their last 10 games, BUT they are on a 4-game winning streak.  What happened?  The HOrnets got LaMelo Ball back and his pace and style helps the team score much better than they had been… And they are 4-0 ATS during the last 4 games while 0-6 ATS during the previous six games.  They won their last game over the Miami Heat 108-103. In the win 6 Hornets scored in double figures.  LaMelo moves the ball quickly.

The Pistons are 27th in scoring with 111.8 points per game, and 21st in rebounds with 42.6 per game. On defense they are tragically 29th while allowing 119.3 points per game.  They are -7.5 points per game WHILE opponents frequently sit starters early.

The Hornets are 24th in scoring with 112.6 points per game, 7th in rebounds with 45.1 per game. On defense they rank a tragic 28th while allowing 118.6 points per game.  They are -6 points per game… BUT the low offensive numbers were built while LaMelo Ball was on the bench with an injury for practically the entire year.

Our prediction for Monday, February 27th is…. Hornets 123 - Pistons 110

Bet on the Hornets.  PG LaMelo Ball will take his style of pushing the pace against one of the worst defenses in the world.  It will pay off.  Bet on the Hornets.

Pistons: Rookie C Jalen Duran.  Taken 12 picks AHEAD of Utah Jazz rookie Center Walker Kessler.  The two were college teammates and Jalen got most of the shine then… Walker is getting most of the shine now.  Jalen will need the chance to simply get reps and settle into being a pro.  Of course he will be traded or will have to become a power forward in the event that the Pistons win the NBA Draft Lottery. ** Update Jalen may not play… instead C James Wiseman will play… Did you know that this is where Wiseman ended up?  Does anyone care?

Hornets:  SF Gordon Hayward.  He was an all-star and a much coveted free agent a few years back.  Then he broke his leg in the first game of a massive contract with the Boston Celtics.  That injury gave plenty of playing time to young Celtics Tatum and Brown and may have played a big part in building the current version of the Celtics.  He now toils for one of the worst teams in the league… possibly dreaming about “what could have been?”.  In a year or two he will be a bench shooter for a contender on a veteran minimum deal.
