The Bobcats lost for the first time since the calendar year was still at 2022 when they lost 78-72 to the Iona Gaels on Sunday. Considering four of those wins were by single digits, you knew that a loss was likely coming at some point.
But this one was just a wild one. Quinnipiac blew a 17-point halftime lead to lose 78-72 to Iona. The Gaels are a strong team, but to come back in that fashion was a strong statement. Dezi Jones finished with a game-high 24 points to go with six rebounds, but fouled out. When your leading scorer fouls out and doesn’t do enough to score more than 72 points is a problem. Quinnipiac shot 35 percent as a team and just 9 of 27 from the 3-point line. It also would’ve helped if they didn’t miss 11 free throws.
Quinnipiac has covered in five of the last seven games, including the loss to Iona where they were 7.5-point underdogs. One of the rare instances where Quinnipiac was actually an underdog, they held their own for 20 minutes before succumbing in the final 20. Well deserved of that cover, even though it was close.
Marist is coming into this game having lost four in a row and have failed to cover in their last four. The Red Foxes are coming off a 70-55 loss at home to the Siena Saints after shooting 37.7 percent from the floor and just 2 of 18 from 3-point range. Clearly not the best output from a team that already struggled to score.
Patrick Gardner finished with a team-high 18 points and seven rebounds, while Kam Farris finished with 14 points off the bench in 28 minutes.
This four-game ATS losing streak for Marist follows after covering three straight during a three-game winning streak. The problem is Marist seems to be a little streaky. Their season has been defined by streaks, really. After losing four, they lost three. Then they lost five, then won three, and have now lost four. Clearly, there’s a pattern and it’s too funny of a pattern to stop right now.
Prediction
Quinnipiac isn’t in a great spot to be letting tough losses to get to them. Fortunately, Marist isn’t that great of an opponent to take advantage of a team when they’re lying down. Quinnipiac handles business in a big way. Quinnipiac 78, Marist 60
