Indiana - Michigan State preview, prediction and analysis

The Indiana Hoosiers dropped a few spots from the top 25 after a week that included the greatest Cinderella story of our time in Northwestern beating them, but the Hoosiers are still in a good place to finish strong after winning on Saturday against Illinois. The No. 17 Hoosiers will be taking on the Michigan State Spartans, who are coming off an emotionally-drained loss to Michigan last weekend.

After Indiana fell to the Wildcats 64-62 on Feb. 15, they bounced back to win 71-68 in a grinder of a game against the Fighting Illini on Saturday. Once again, the team was filled through by Trayce Jackson-Davis, who might be a solid pick for Big Ten Player of the Year. He finished with a game-high 26 points and also grabbed 12 rebounds, as Indiana shot just 44 percent from the floor but got a decent supporting cast around Jackson-Davis. Jalen Hood-Schifino had 13 points but shot just 5 of 17 from the floor.

Jackson-Davis surpassed coach Mike Woodson on the program’s all-time scoring list in the process with 2,081 points.

“It's an accomplishment," Jackson-Davis said. “I'm just glad we found a way to get that one. They were without one of their best players and those dudes showed a lot of heart. So just finding a way down the stretch and getting stops, that was big for us.”

Indiana is 2.5 games behind Purdue and a game behind Northwestern in the standings, and this isn’t going to be the set where you should expect them to surpass anyone. Fortunately, they are absolutely going to be heading to the NCAA Tournament and should be a big problem for anyone trying to face them.

Michigan State is coming off an 84-72 loss to the Michigan Wolverines in what was one of the more emotionally-charged games in the state of Michigan in quite some time. Days after a horrendous shooting on the campus at Michigan State, the Spartans returned to the court but fell short against the Wolverines.

Joey Hauser led the way with 20 points and Michigan State shot 47.5 percent from the floor, but just couldn’t generate anything when shooting 7 of 19 from the 3-point line. Malik Hall added 14 points in 25 minutes off the bench.

Prediction

One thing we have to keep in mind: This is going to be the first home game since the shooting. The Michigan State student section and fans will be emotionally charged to get this one, and I think that’s going to play a big factor, hence why MSU is favored by 3. I do, however, think Indiana finds a way to get it done in a close game. Indiana 77, Michigan State 76
