Orange vs Hokies Preview and Analysis

RECENT FORM
Syracuse has played 7 games in 2021.  They have won 3 and lost 4.  They have had a really rough Oct so far.. Currently on a 3-game losing streak.  The wins were against Ohio 29-9, Albany 62-24, Liberty 24-21.  The losses were against Rutgers 17-7, Florida State 33-30, Wake Forest 40-37 (in overtime), and the Clemson Tigers 17-14.  The 4 losses have all been in close games… the last three losses were each by the difference of 3 points.  They need some wins before November and they have 2 chances… or it will be a lost season.

Virginia Tech has played 6 games.  Three wins, three losses.  The Hokies wins were against the North Carolina Tar Heels 17-10, Middle Tennessee 35-14, and Richmond 21-10.  The losses were to West Virginia 27-21, Notre Dame 32-29, and the Pitt Panthers 28-7.  (That’s the Pittsburgh Panthers for the uninitiated).

These are NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) division rivals in the Atlantic Coast Conference.  They have played each other 18 times throughout history, but more often since Syracuse joined the conference in 2013. Virginia Tech has won 8, Syracuse has won 10.  The last time was Oct. 15, 2016 Syracuse won 31-17.

Offensive Analysis

Syracuse is ranked 63rd on offense in the FBS.  They have scored 26 touchdowns while averaging 404 yards per game.  The orange weakness is the passing game where they plummet to 112th in the FBS with only 6 passing TDs on the season coming from 172.3 passing yards per game.  The inverse of course is true, they are 13th in rushing offense in the FBS, 20 TDs from 231.7 yards per game.

Virginia Tech is ranked 120th on offense in the FBS.  They have scored 15 TDs (remember they have played 1 less game) while averaging 310.5 ypg.

Defensive Analysis

Syracuse is the 20th ranked defense in the FBS.  They have allowed 19 touchdowns and 308 yards per game.  They are the 28th ranked run defense.

Virginia Tech is the 49th ranked defense in the FBS.  They have allowed 15 touchdowns and 353 yards per game. They are the 80th ranked run defense.
