Maryland - Nebraska preview, prediction and analysis
You know who I was thinking about the other day? I was thinking about Maryland basketball legend Juan Dixon. If you know any bit of college basketball you remember what this man did Once Upon a time over two decades ago. He strapped himself to a rocket and lead the Maryland Terrapins all the way to a national championship. It was one of the more unexpected yet great runs of college basketball that anyone has ever seen and since that time Maryland has not been able to produce anything even remotely close to quality basketball come March.
So I say that to tell you that in light of recent events of Maryland knocking off Purdue last week, I don't necessarily think this is going to mean anything good in the future for Maryland, as it prepares itself to take on Nebraska on Sunday in Lincoln. But what I will succumb to when it comes to Maryland is that they have found ways to win games in the most unlikeliest of ways and the unlikeliness is not really the shocking value here. The shocking value is that the big 10 is the most convoluted conference that we have ever seen and even Maryland, along with the likes of Indiana and Northwestern, are finding ways to beat these top tier opponents.
Because you look at Maryland and how they beat Purdue last week and yes Purdue is unequivocally looking like a big fraud before our very eyes over and over and over again, but they are beating the likes of Indiana and they are beating the likes of Penn State and they are beating the likes of the teams they should be beating in this conference.
Is that sustainable? Who's to say? Marilyn still has home games against Minnesota which should be a win, and northwestern which is going to be the biggest test that they will have this season considering the fact that they have to go to Ohio State and Penn State before the regular season closes. There is legitimate chances here for Maryland to storm its way back into the good graces of those evaluating if they want to be in the NCAA tournament this year. Again, it's not really that likely, but we all saw what happened when Dixon got his team into March and went on that run. Maryland, I can assure you, does not have the likes of a Juan Dixon on this team.
But I can almost assure you that they will do anything in their power to find the guy, clone him to the best of their abilities to turn this man into a walking bucket and somehow lead Maryland to the promised land. Is that going to happen? Probably not but the way that this college basketball season has unfolded, I am of the mindset that any one can win a national championship. I would even go as far as to say that Loyola Chicago and sister Jean or by their weight to get back to the NCAA tournament which means they would have to win their own conference tournament which means that is likely not going to happen under any circumstances whatsoever.
