We’re nearing the halfway mark of the season in the NBA and it’s been quite the ride so far. Al McMordie is cashing hard at 22-15-0 in the last 30 days, while Doc’s Sports has also had a strong run of form as of late at 14-10-0 (+$3,000). If they’ve been killing it as much as they were in the first half, what does the second half have in store? Clippers - Mavs preview, prediction and analysis

Recent form
Clippers: won 131-126 at Spurs
Mavs: won 115-90 vs. Heat

The Los Angeles Clippers will be playing the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday, January 22 in Dallas, Texas.

The Los Angeles Clippers won against the San Antonio Spurs last Friday, January 20 in San Antonio, Texas with a score of 131-126. The Los Angeles Clippers currently rank 2nd in the Pacific Division. Kawhi Leonard scored a season-high 36 points against the San Antonio Spurs.

The Clippers had lost nine of 11, but coach Tyronn Lue believed this game could mark the start of a turnaround for his team.

“I felt it this morning,” Lue said. “I think having our guys back and everyone going back to their natural roles helps us out a lot. With Kawhi and PG (Paul George) on the floor, we play at a high level.”

When looking at the landscape of the Clippers, it's about just how they've been doing with the injuries. They've won just three of their last 10, but when you bet everything on the health of Paul George and Leonard, it makes things difficult. Not only have they struggled straight up, but the Clippers are just 2-8 against the spread. They can't be trusted in either landscape.

And now, going against a Mavs team that just had its best defensive effort of the year after their coach called out the team, perhaps they found a formula that works. Keep in mind, this is a team that's clearly got their number.

The Dallas Mavericks won against the Miami Heat last Friday, January 20 in Dallas, Texas with a score of 115-90. The Dallas Mavericks currently rank 3rd in the Southwest Division. Luka Doncic had 34 points and 12 rebounds.

They responded two nights after blistering criticism of their defense from coach Jason Kidd by holding the Heat to 33% shooting in the first and third quarters combined while outscoring Miami 63-35.

Dallas gave up 40 points in the first quarter of a 130-122 loss to Atlanta, a third consecutive defeat in which the Mavs allowed at least 130 points. Miami's total was a season-low for a Mavericks opponent.

“It wasn’t me calling them out or saying we had a walkthrough, shootaround during the game against Atlanta,” Kidd said. “I just think you could see they were flying around. So now we’ve got to hold them to that standard.

The Mavs aren't where they should be, but they're in a favorable spot in a crowded Western Conference. There's the Denver Nuggets, the Memphis Grizzlies and then a dropoff. Even though they've won four of their last 10, Dallas isn't out of this. As long as their MVP candidate continues to eat worlds the way that he has, I wouldn't put it past Dallas to figure it out defensively and get on the right track. Much like the Clippers, the Mavs are also struggling against the spread, covering just three of the last 10.

Prediction

I know it seems kind of suicidal to take the Mavs against the Clippers, but I really like how they responded to getting called out by Kidd before a tough battle against Miami. Dallas is going to have its struggles, especially without Christian Wood in the lineup for the next few days, but I want to see how the Mavs handle getting called out like that. I'm intrigued by that. Mavs 114, Clippers 104
