Kansas - TCU preview, prediction and analysis
For all the college basketball fans in the world, this is your heavyweight bout on a Monday night while the NBA is off and the NHL has a few early games in the morning window. Another week where the Kansas Jayhawks hold all the cards in the fate of the Big 12’s regular season conference title when they host the No. 22 TCU Horned Frogs, who might not be ranked for long by the time Monday’s list comes out.
Kansas is coming into Fort Worth winners of four straight, with the latest being an 87-71 dominant effort over the No. 9 Baylor Bears at home on Saturday. Kansas’ offense has heated up at the right time with hitting 78 points in each of these last four games. But of course, Kansas did its thing by having Jalen Wilson go off as he usually does. The star big man had 21 points and 13 rebounds while going 9 of 10 from the free-throw line, and K.J. Adams had 17 points on 5 of 6 shooting. DaJuan Harris added 14 points, all scored in the second half.
“That's Harris and (Kevin) McCullar,” Kansas coach Bill Self said when asked to describe the turnaround in the second half. “The good looks (Baylor) got in the second half, they didn't make them. In the first half, even when they got hard looks, they made them. "Harris can make shots. He just doesn't take a lot of them.”
Despite that rough patch in January where the Jayhawks were seemingly on the verge of falling out of the Big 12 race, they’ve rebounded greatly and are tied atop the standings with Texas and a game ahead of the Baylor team they just beat a couple of days ago.
This four-game winning streak Kansas is on has included two tough road games in the state of Oklahoma while beating ranked opponents in the Longhorns and Bears. To say that’s a good run would be an understatement.
TCU had been one of the top teams in the conference at the start of February, but four straight losses set them back a huge deal and it seems like they will be on the outside looking in of the top 25 when the rankings hit Monday. But TCU is coming off a 100-75 win over Oklahoma State that saw them shot an absurd 68.4 percent from the floor and making 53 percent of their threes.
Mike Miles Jr., who had missed the last 3 weeks with a knee issue, had 15 points and was one of six players to score in double figures.
“We were very conservative with this thing coming back,” coach Jamie Dixon said of Miles' return. “He practiced four times, so we felt pretty good that he was ready to go from the start.”
Prediction
TCU handled an inferior opponent with no issue. That’s what they should’ve done during that four-game losing streak. Miles back will help a major deal for TCU in terms of dictating the offense, but Kansas might have things handled right now with what kind of team they want to be. TCU is slightly favored, but Kansas is a safe play. Kansas 82, TCU 77
